A quiet little town on the banks of the Niger River, Segou is known as the capital of mud cloth. Textile designer Boubacar Doumbia built his workshop there 16 years ago, named it Ndomo - which means "the quest for knowledge" in local Bambara language, and welcomed young people who had no opportunity to receive formal education into his collective.

One of the leading designers in Japan, Shigeru Uchida (内田繁, 1943-2016) had
his entire career centered on finding the balance between modern design principles
and traditional Japanese culture. His major works include a series of boutiques for
Yohji Yamamoto, the Hotel Il Palazzo in Fukuoka, the Kobe Fashion Museum, and
the tea rooms 'Ji-an'(受庵), 'So-an'(想庵), 'Gyo-an'(行庵). The Paper Moon Lanterns
are designed by Uchida and produced by Asano in the Gifu prefecture of Japan,
where artisans have been crafting exquisite paper lanterns for more than 90 years.
