Did you know that a banana plant is not a tree, but a large herb? In rural hinterlands in Southern India, after each banana harvest, banana plants are treated as agricultural waste and end up in landfills. In order to reduce waste and create sustainable jobs, local organization Rural Social Enterprise motivated over 300 rural weavers to engage in the collection, spinning, and weaving of banana plant fibers. This set of placemat with hand-crocheted cotton lace is one of their beautiful transformations. Enjoy this strong, durable, and renewable natural material with exquisite handmade details!
