Handmade by Burundian refugee artisans at the Mtendeli refugee camp in Tanzania, the Ikiba line of baskets incorporate locally sourced materials into modern designs rooted in traditional Burundian basketry.
Sisal and sweet grass have been commonly used across Eastern Africa for basket making. The white strings were recycled from the sacks used by the World Food Program to deliver food supplies for refugees. Meticulously hand woven over a period of several days (or sometimes, several weeks) by an artisan woman, each basket carries the unique personal touch of its maker. We hope you love the simple elegance that adds a meaningful accent to your décor.
