Like many other things
that belong to an lifestyle of the past,
bamboo quickly lost its dominance during the rapid
industrialization movements of the last few decades.
Skillful artisans who used to work with bamboo
now have to pursue other livelihoods.
Some budding designers
are reinterpreting this ancient, sustainable material.
For these designer-entrepreneurs,
the revival of bamboo crafts depends on three things -
contemporary and utilitarian product design,
a combination of traditional craftsmanship
and new treatment techniques,
and most importantly,
people's awareness of the urge to
preserve their heritage crafts.
